Pompeii was located about 10 miles from Mount Vesuvius, an active volcano. On August 24th 79 CE, Mount Vesuvius erupted. This volcanic eruption propelled lava, pumice stone, and hot ash 21 miles into the air, at 1.5 million tons per second.
